For me, lilacs are deeply rooted in Minnesota’s landscape and identity. Their sweet scent and purple blooms arrive after months of harsh winter, signaling not only the changing of seasons but also renewal and hope.
The woman in this painting is placed among the lilacs to symbolize belonging and the quiet strength of migrant communities. Our diverse cultures are an essential part of Minnesota’s social and economic fabric, yet they are often asked to endure uncertainty and exclusion.
This work also serves as an homage to the Minnesotans who stood in solidarity with immigrant communities and resisted federal immigration enforcement during Operation Metro Surge in the winter of 2026. Through collective action, compassion, and resilience we can create space for everyone here who wants to make Minnesota home.
