“In the midst of Operation Metro Surge, I was invited to support the planning of a funeral. I was asked to make art for the services of a victim of ICE violence-- Renée Good-- to make the funerary environs as bright and luminous as her physical presence had been.
This painting is made of handmade paper. It includes materials made to decorate the funeral service, as well as from queer celebrations in the Minneapolis neighborhood Renée lived and died in. Ultramarine blue, a color with celestial and transcendent connotations, enshrines these materials. The painting is a delicate vessel, literally containing both mourning and celebration— celebration of a soul whose actions of love toward her neighbors rippled anti-ICE protest further than previously imaginable, and mourning for a profound loss of a human life under a reign of terror.”
